Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) & K-Vest
What is TPI?
The Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) is the world’s leading educational organization and research facility dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing.
Since its inception in 2003, TPI has studied thousands of golfers ranging from the top professional tour players to weekend enthusiasts. An incredible amount of data on players of all shapes, sizes, ages, and fitness levels has been gathered during this time. Using this data, TPI discovered how a properly functioning body allows a player to swing a golf club in the most efficient way possible. Additionally, TPI has analyzed how physical limitations in a player’s body can adversely affect the golf swing and potentially lead to injury.
TPI’s mission is to educate golfers and industry professionals on the body/swing connection through its one of a kind ‘TPI Certified’ educational program. This program was developed by founders Dr. Greg Rose and Dave Phillips along with a 52 member advisory staff of industry leading experts. Six unique fields of study are offered for TPI Certification: Golf Coaching, Golf Mechanics, Medical, Fitness, Power and Junior Development. Currently, there are over 9,000 TPI Certified professionals in 57 countries assisting players of all skill levels.
TPI Philosophy
TPI believes that the most efficient swing is not the same for every golfer, because efficiency is unique to their body. To achieve an efficient swing, a golfer must first be screened. This screen involves an assessment of swing mechanics and biomechanics, physical fitness, movement quality, current health and a client history.
Once this screen is finished, the results are used to create a plan unique for that golfer. The plan may include fitness training, physical therapy and treatment, coaching of swing mechanics and biomechanics, nutrition, mental strategy or all of the above. A golfer will see the greatest improvement by surrounding themselves with a team of experts. Similarly, any professional in the golf industry will see their clients benefit most by themselves being part of a network or team of professionals.
Education
(J3) TPI Certified Junior Coach
Focuses on teaching the skills required to run a junior golf program for ages 17 and under. The program is based on TPI’s Long Term Athletic Development (LTAD) Program and gives the tools necessary to run and operate a successful junior gold program.
The first track focuses on the LTAD basics, growth velocity, Active Start (ages 0-5), Fundamental Phase (ages 5-8), and Learn to Play Phase (ages 9-12), windows of opportunities, coaching themes, conditioning themes, the Wave training circuit, the SMASH Zone training circuit, and now to get kids on the fold course at an early age.
The second track focuses on the pubertal growth spurt, the Learning to Compete Phase (ages 12-15), the Train to Compete Phase (ages 15-17), High School golf, the Wave training circuit, Golf 4 Life Program and the Elite Development Program.
(G3) TPI Certified Golf Mechanics
The Golf Mechanics track focuses on all aspects of swing analysis, swing mechanics, ball flights, launch monitors, advanced 3D biomechanics, vision and the visual system. The track includes both full swing and short game.
The first part of the track focuses on the full swing including identifying and manipulating the ball flight. The use of launch monitors and video swing analysis are covered in great detail as is the use of 3D motion capture to identify how to change a players movements to be more efficient.
(P2) TPI Certified Power Coach
The Power Coach track focuses on a single skill – how to hit the ball farther. All aspects of power development including equipment modifications, swing tips, swing characteristics common in long hitters and physical training techniques are covered in great detail.
The first track focuses on power development which includes speed development windows, power sources in the golf swing, power testing, strength testing and physical training techniques designed to help hit the ball as far as possible.
K-Vest Certified Level 1 Golf Instructor
The K-Vest certification course focuses on analyzing the kinematic sequence which is the body’s ability to create speed and power by transferring rotational velocity from segment to segment in the golf swing. The segments that K-Vest measure are: pelvis, upper body and shaft in bend, side bend and rotation. These velocities and measurements clearly define each person’s power signature in their golf swing.
Biofeedback and drills can be created with different tolerances to help speed up the learning curve and to create a powerful, efficient golf swing by eliminating all of the guess work.
US Kids Golf Coach Certified
